Planning Your Wedding Table Linens

Many people underestimate the importance of choosing the right wedding table linens. While choosing the wrong linen may not ruin your wedding. The right table linens can make a dramatic statement.

So, before you consider getting the standard round white tablecloth, look at the other options available. Colored table linens in bright vibrant colors are often in the same price range as the standard white linens.

As you plan your wedding remember you want to dress your table. Beautiful wedding table linens will dramatically change the atmosphere of any location. They will not only allow you to create a personal statement, it can also add some color, style and elegance to your wedding reception.

Are wedding table linens included in the price of your reception?
Before you start looking into wedding table linens, determine if it's included in the cost of your reception. Speak to your wedding planner, caterer or the reception venue. If they've included "house linens" in your reception package, determine if they have the table linens you want. If they don't have what you would like in terms of size, shape or color, ask if they will refund part of the cost if you do not use their linens.

If the venue provides tablecloths how can I make my tables unique?
If the tablecloths are provided, you can customize your table with table runners. You can also layer a smaller table cloth over the one provided. These will allow you to create a custom look for your wedding table while saving some money.

What color do you want your wedding table linens to be?
Many people opt for the traditional wedding linen colors - white, black, ivory and burgundy. However, you can get creative. Why not match your table linens to the colors of your bridesmaid's dresses or with the room decor.

Do you want the wedding table linens to reach the floor?
Many people want to see the tablecloths touching the floor at weddings and other special events, but that's not a rule. Some people prefer the tablecloth fall half-way so that it doesn't bunch under the table. The length of the tablecloth is called the "drop." Make sure to know the measurements of the tables and use a table linen size guide to ensure that the table linens are the right size.

Should I buy my wedding table linens online?
You can find the largest selection of wedding table linens online. Shopping online will give you the best chance of finding the color, size and shape you need, at a reasonable price. However you should take care to check around before you buy anything. Shipping costs can increase the prices per item significantly, so you may want to look for online stores offering free shipping.

How can I ensure that I get the right color if I order online?
It's difficult to judge the correct colors when looking for wedding table linens online. Most monitors will show a color closely matching the true color of the linens. However, it's always best to order a fabric swatch of the colors you like. A swatch will allow you to compare the colors and also see which colors work best with the color scheme of your wedding and the venue.

How do I know how many tablecloths I need?
The number of tablecloths will be determined by how many tables and how many people will be at the reception. A standard 60 inch round table fits 8 to 10 people, a 72 inch round sits 10 to 12. If you want you're guests to be comfortable opt for the lower number. If space is an issue the higher number may be required.

In addition to the tablecloths for the guests tables you also need to consider the head table, catering buffet tables, cocktail table, gift table and cake table

  • The head table should match the guest table linens. Although the bride and grooms chairs may be decorated.
  • The catering buffet table should match the guest tables linens.
  • The gift table only needs to match the guest table linens if it is located in the main dining area.
  • The cocktail table only need to match the guest table linens if they are visible to each other.
  • The place card table does not need to match the guest table linens since it's usually located in the lobby or cocktail area.
  • The cake table's tablecloth can be shorter since many cake tables have wheels and needs to be movable and a longer tablecloth can lead to accidents.
